Museums in the 21st Century – travelling exhibition comes to Munich
The BMW museum as a venue for exhibitions and part of the exhibition
From 20 May to 19 September, the BMW Museum Munich is showing the special exhibition “Museums in the 21st Century. Ideas, Projects, Buildings”. 27 museum designs from leading architects are showcased, to include Coop Himmelb(l)au with the Musée des Confluences in Lyon (France), Taddao Ando with the Chichu Museum of Art in Naoshima (Japan) or also Daniel Libeskind with the extension to the Denver Art Museum. Sketches and models, photos and renderings illustrate how unconventional or versatile the new prestige projects purport to be.
The BMW Museum, designed by ATELIER BRÜCKNER, is itself worth taking a special look at. It is typical of a particular trend in current museum architecture with its content-generated design. The architecture and exhibition design reflect the image of a brand. One challenge for the Stuttgart architects lay in integrating the new permanent exhibition into the designated historic building complex at BMW group headquarters. To achieve this, a flat building from the 1970s was gutted and connected with a new circuit. This leads the visitor across squares and bridges to individual exhibition houses, staged using a variety of media. The spacious, urban ambience allows the dynamism of the automotive world to become tangible.
The international travelling exhibition “Museums in the 21st Century” is shown in the historic BMW bowl, which has been converted by ATELIER BRÜCKNER to house temporary exhibitions and connected to the permanent exhibition. The current presentation assembled by Art Centre Basel is revealed over an area covering 1000 square meters overall, situated along a ramp with five platforms.
