Bodman-Ludwigshafen Museum – a fresh perspective on Lake Constance

ATELIER BRÜCKNER presents exhibition concept

Bodman gave Bodensee (Lake Constance) its name – who is even aware of that nowadays? A new permanent exhibition, designed by ATELIER BRÜCKNER, intends to change this. Commissioned by the municipality of Bodman-Ludwigshafen, ATELIER BRÜCKNER from Stuttgart has drawn up a concept for the museum. It was presented to the public on 23rd March.

As a guiding theme, the designers of the exhibition chose the topography particular to Bodman-Ludwigshafen. Visitors can immerse themselves in history and stories by way of the topography. They gain access to the past, both at outdoor places and in the museum building. A multimedia guide leads the visitors to sites of historical interest within the town and to natural landmarks all around Bodman-Ludwigshafen. Sagas, images, music and films provide a special access to the cultural landscape.

In the museum, a large floor map dominates the room. As visitors walk over it, they discover the village and its history. Valuable exhibits, assigned to the place they were found, cause the visitor to stop and learn more about individual topics, whether this is underwater archaeology with the important stilt dwellings from the early Bronze Age or the Imperial Estate (Kaiserpfalz), which represented a substantial seat of power on Lake Constance between the 7th and 11th century. A document from 1550 testifies to the term “Lacus Podamicus”, derived from the village of “Podman”, today’s Bodman-Ludwigshafen, which is situated on the northernmost slope of Lake Constance.

Media installations offer a variety of ways of approaching the contents of the exhibition. For instance, an interactive diary of finds of local research history is planned, different layers of display cases, showing different layers of occupation with their respective finds, or magnifier tables, which focus on archaeological monuments and the history of the counts of Bodman. Media staged “time windows” open the dialogue between the museum visitor and the surrounding countryside. A direct comparison between the landscape of today and that of history can be made by means of film projection onto the windows of the museum building.
