Dialogue with Time – Rethinking Aging
Coloured Spaces arouse Dialogues
The Museum für Kommunikation Berlin (Museum of Communication Berlin) is putting on an exhibition entitled "Dialog mit der Zeit" (Dialogue with Time) from 1st April to 23rd August; inaugurated by Germany`s Federal President Joachim Gauck on the 31st of March. It is dedicated to an impartial consideration of the topic of aging. ATELIER BRÜCKNER designed coloured spaces in which the dialogue can unfold.
Vibrant basic colours (cyan, magenta, yellow) lend structure to the exhibition and elicit a new way of looking at issues that have been repressed. Older people are the dialogue partners. They start the conversation and provide guidance through the exhibition, whereby talking to them enables the visitor to construct a personal view of the different aspects of aging.
In the yellow area, visitors experience physical and mental limitations that they can interactively comprehend. In contrast, the magenta-coloured area focuses on the positive apects associated with aging – purportedly a look through rose-tinted glasses. Two blue areas of the exhibition provide concentrated space for a dialogue on the personal nature of aging and the future of aging, also with regard to demographic change.
The dialogue is the essence of the exhibition; it fosters empathy with the older generation and induces a differentiated, rich picture of being old and growing old. Growing old is a natural process that every human being goes through. Oversized hourglasses and the video projection of a face that appears to imperceptibly change from an infant to a very old woman illustrate this at the beginning of the exhibition.
More than 18.000 people have seen the exhibition already, when it took place at the Museum of Communication Frankfurt. From 24th September 2014 to 1st March 2015 it was exhibited there. The concept underlying the contents of this special exhibition comes from Dialogue Social Enterprise GmbH. The curators are Orna Cohen and Andreas Heinecke.
