EMEE Young Scenographers Contest: Prize-giving ceremony and exhibition
Museum objects reinterpreted within a European context
A fresh view on European cultural heritage! The Young Scenographers Contest surprises with outstanding works. The results of the European design contest are presented at the Museum im Palais in Graz from 8 May to 7 June – an exhibition in the course of Designmonat Graz. Plans, models, photos and room installations are dedicated to the multiperspective staging of European museum objects. Following the presentation in Graz, the exhibition will tour through Europe. Further exhibition sites are Ljubljana, Sofia, Lisbon, Paris, Brussels and Basel, each with different focus, as in Graz it is on the award winners.
The award winners are Mirjam Scheerer with her work "Did you hit the Jackpot?" (1. Prize), the team consisting of Stephanie Gindlstrasser and Johanna Köttritsch for the installation "(ART) Europallet" (2. Prize) and Valerie Keusch for "Contemporary Witness Olivetti M40 Kr." (3. Prize). The fourth prize goes to Victoria Orrom for the work "Worth It". The prize-giving ceremony took place at the Museum im Palais in Graz on 7 May 2015, in cooperation with FH JOANNEUM. A total amount of 4,250 Euro prize money was handed over.
Ruedi Baur, chairman of the eleven-strong international jury, praises the "highly conceptual and three-dimensional quality" of the works. 60 concepts have been submitted altogether, 29 nominated and 11 prepared for the travelling exhibition. The accompanying catalogue presents all 29 works and reproduces the jury's evaluation of the winning entries. It is a documentation of ambitious stagings with transcultural perspectives as a chance for the European museum of the 21st century.
The international contest was launched as part of the EU project entitled "EuroVision – Museums Exhibiting Europe" (EMEE). The competition aimed at students and young professionals from different creative disciplines. They were invited to reinterpret museum objects within a European context and place them in settings that enable multiple perspectives. ATELIER BRÜCKNER was responsible for organizing the contest.
EMEE is a four-year European project for the development of national and regional museums, and is being sponsored by the European Union with around 2 million euros. It is being coordinated by the University of Augsburg, chair of history didactics. Project partners are the University Paris-Est Créteil, France, the University Roma Tre, Italy, the National Museum of History, Sofia, Bulgaria, the National Museum of Archaeology, Lisbon, Portugal, the National Museum of Contemporary History, Ljubljana, Slovenia, the art association monochrome in Vienna, Austria, and – as the only design office – ATELIER BRÜCKNER in Stuttgart. The project team is jointly working on innovative concepts in order to explore the significance of museum items in a European dimension and to make museums more attractive to visitors. The aim is to give museum visitors the opportunity to actively participate.
