PRESS RELEASE

With the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) in Benin City, Nigeria, a place is emerging that redefines the cultural landscape of West Africa. The independent non-profit institution is a vibrant center for research, art, and archaeology – a place of learning, exchange, and cultural self-determination. In a region where archaeology has so far had little institutional foundation, MOWAA has, since 2020, sent a strong signal: West Africa is researching, preserving, and narrating its own history – an example of transformation through knowledge and creativity.

ATELIER BRÜCKNER designed the publicly accessible exhibition gallery of the MOWAA Institute, while the architecture was created by Adjaye Associates.

MOWAA forms the heart of a growing Creative District. The first building of the campus, the MOWAA Institute opened as a laboratory for research, conservation, and innovation. It is equipped with workshops, storage, offices, a library, seminar rooms, and an auditorium. Here, archaeologists, scientists, and artists work side by side – in an interdisciplinary network of collaboration – to share knowledge and open new perspectives on West Africa’s cultural identity.

The exhibition space, “Living Archive,” designed by ATELIER BRÜCKNER, is the visible showcase of this work. It connects research and the public, fostering transparency and dialogue – principles reflected throughout the design. Visitors experience how history is created, how knowledge is shared, and how culture is vividly conveyed, a scenographic narrative that transforms learning into an experience.

The exhibition presents objects from MOWAA’s first historical collection: highlights, new acquisitions, and conservation projects. Its centerpiece is the interaction with the visible storage: a glass wall separates the gallery from the archive while allowing views in both directions. Directly behind it, shelves display original artefacts made of wood, clay, and bronze, offering a transparent glimpse into the work behind the scenes. Touchscreens provide access to detailed information and 3D scans of the exhibited objects. Another digital station invites visitors to become archaeologists themselves – to learn through play and explore excavation sites and finds across West Africa.

MOWAA stands as a symbol of empowerment through knowledge, culture, and creativity. It demonstrates that museums are not merely places of preservation, but spaces of transformation – places of learning, identity, and dialogue, a crossroads between contemporary art and a rich cultural heritage.

Here, the past is not confined to display but extended into the future, an invitation to all to tell and continue writing their own stories.
