Project of ATELIER BRÜCKNER wins European Museum of the Year award
Micheletti Award goes to the tim | State Museum of Textile and Industry, Augsburg
European Museum of the Year: The State Museum of Textile and Industry (tim | Staatliches Textil- und Industriemuseum Augsburg) has won one of the most important museum prizes in Europe! Last Saturday evening, Princess Sibilla of Luxembourg presented the highly desired Micheletti Awards trophy to museum director Dr. Karl Borromäus Murr and exhibition designer Prof. Uwe R. Brückner of ATELIER BRÜCKNER. Around 100 guests from the international museum scene attended the awards ceremony in the Steel Hall of the DASA Working World Exhibition in Dortmund. The award for Europe's best museum of industry, technology and science has been bestowed annually since 1996. It is given for creative applications and new forms of interpretation in the area of industry, the world of work or science.
A total of 18 candidates from nine countries were nominated this year. For Germany, the Deutsche Technikmuseum in Berlin, the Odysseum in Cologne, the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart and the TECHNOSEUM (the State Museum of Engineering and Labour) in Mannheim were contenders. Among its reasons for selecting the tim as the winner, the jury stressed the outstanding way in which information is conveyed with a multi-facetted range of media and personal explanations given by staff. The tim is a museum in which visitors not only find out about history but can also experience it interactively. A yarn spinning mill from the year 1836 provides the historical ambience in which the museum has been at home since January 2010. At the centre of the permanent exhibition, there is the pattern book collection of the Neue Augsburger Kattunfabrik (NAK = new Augsburg cotton factory), presented as a multi-media spatial installation around which two narrative strings embedded in a highly varied setting portray the history of textiles and their production. ATELIER BRÜCKNER is responsible for the conception and implementation of this exhibition design.
“We are very honoured by the prize, which serves as an incentive for our future work”, said Dr. Karl Borromäus Murr. “After receiving several design awards, the achievement of now winning the most prestigious European museum prize in the area of industry, technology and science demonstrates the high quality and modern approach to the way in which the history of the Bavarian textile industry is designed in the tim. Our concept of the living hands-on museum is exemplary and is also correspondingly appreciated by the visitors. Since its opening in January 2010, more than 160,000 people have already visited the tim. Augsburg, Bavaria and Germany can be justifiably proud of this young museum!”
