Client: MOWAA, Benin City, Nigeria Size (sqm): MOWAA Institute: 4.500 sqm; Exhibition gallery: 650 sqm
The Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) in Benin City is emerging as a place that redefines the cultural landscape of West Africa . As an independent non-profit institution, it serves as a vibrant center for research, art, and archaeology – a space for learning, exchange, and cultural self-determination. ATELIER BRÜCKNER designed the publicly accessible exhibition gallery, while the architecture was created by Adjaye Associates.
At the heart of the new Creative District, the MOWAA Institute functions as a laboratory for research, conservation, and innovation. Its exhibition space, the “Living Archive,” connects research and the public, offering transparent views into visible storage with original artefacts and providing digital access to detailed information and 3D scans. Inspired by regional materials, natural stone and bronze-toned surfaces create an authentic atmosphere, supported by indirect daylight that contributes to sustainability. MOWAA stands as a symbol of empowerment through knowledge, culture, and creativity – a museum as a place of transformation, identity, and dialogue.
