Foundation Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation:
ATELIER BRÜCKNER designs the new permanent exhibition at the Deutschlandhaus
The Board of Trustees of the Foundation Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation has selected ATELIER BRÜCKNER to design the permanent exhibition at the future Exhibition and Documentation Center in Berlin. As announced last Friday, the Stuttgart-based design office was able to win out in a Europe-wide selection procedure.
The Chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, Minister of State Monika Grütters, said: “The successful conclusion of this process ushers in a decisive phase in the creation of the permanent exhibition. ATELIER BRÜCKNER is an internationally renowned design firm. Their proposal demonstrates a high degree of sensitivity to the themes of flight and expulsion, and we expect a contemporary, audience-oriented realization.”
ATELIER BRÜCKNER’s design proposal anticipates an expansive sculpture of a translucent house in the foyer of the renovated Deutschlandhaus. The designers note that the possessions left behind in the house are meant “to symbolize the loss of one’s homeland”, and the suitcase beneath the house is “a symbol for setting out into the unknown.” The open first floor is dominated by a large floor map of Europe that provides a spatial reference to the topics of the exhibition. The exhibition layout then extends over the first and second floors, with the individual chapters playing upon the motif of the house as a symbol for both homeland and new beginnings. Exhibition media, interactive stations, and large-format projections facilitate empathy and multiple perspectives at the same time.
The Foundation Flight, Expulsion, Reconciliation was established in late 2008 under the auspices of the German Historical Museum. The future Exhibition and Documentation Center will be housed in the Deutschlandhaus in Berlin-Kreuzberg; to meet the Foundation’s needs, the building is currently being completely renovated and converted by the architects Marte.Marte.
