"Living the future: the demographic opportunity"
Exhibition designed by ATELIER BRÜCKNER for the Year of Science 2013
ATELIER BRÜCKNER is designing the central 'Year of Science 2013' exhibition, which is dedicated to the theme of demographic change. The underlying concept for the contents comes from the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft, an association that includes 86 independent research institutes. The exhibition has been initiated by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF = Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung). The curators are Petra Lutz and Thomas Spring.
"Zukunft leben: Die demografische Chance" will be shown at first, 27th of February to 7th of April in the Museum of Natural History (Museum für Naturkunde) in Berlin. The exhibition provides a clear illustration of how demographic change is impacting on our lives. Other stations for the exhibition will be the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum, Mainz (19.4 - 2.6.), the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum, Dresden (14.6. - 21.7.), the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum (20.9. - 27.10.), the Deutsches Schifffahrtsmuseum, Bremerhaven (15.11.2013 - 9.1.2014) and the Deutsches Museum, Munich (31.1. - 30.3.2014).
Visitors can look forward to a walk-in spatial installation made up of nine modular elements that visualise diverse aspects of demographic change. The starting point consists of scientific findings and suggested solutions relating to the key issues addressed by the Year of Science: we are living longer, we are decreasing in number and we are becoming more diverse.
The modules have been designed as semi-transparent cubes, freely arranged in space. An external, emotional narrative layer and precisely prepared graphics, extending from the inside of the modules to the outside, overlap each other optically. The colourful graphic design elements and large-format portrait photographs (Uwe Ditz and Annet van der Voort) contribute to the attractive three-dimensional image, which introduces visitors emotionally to the theme of the exhibition. In addition, integrated media stations invite them to take part in a form of playful interaction.
Scenographic accents within the ensemble are the dance performance "Kontakthof" by Pina Bausch, which is projected onto panels of wrinkled fabric, thus giving concrete expression to the relevant theme of ageing. As well as there is a walk-in demography pyramid that portrays 100 years of change in population growth and serves as the sculptural starting point of the exhibition.
