1st Prize for ATELIER BRÜCKNER and Koeber Landscape Architecture
The competition design by ATELIER BRÜCKNER, in collaboration with Koeber Landscape Architecture, for the future Stalag 326 (VI K) Senne Memorial has been awarded first prize.
During the Second World War, the former Stalag 326 was one of the largest prisoner-of-war camps in the German Reich. The future memorial is intended to be a place of remembrance and historical reflection.
The winning design makes the history of the site tangible as a coherent spatial narrative. Architecture, landscape and exhibition design interweave to reveal historic structures such as the camp road, the outlines of the barracks and the camp boundaries. The preserved buildings are integrated into the visitor route as authentic witnesses to the past.
Rather than reconstructing the historic state, the concept makes the different layers of the site’s history visible, creating a sensitive approach to its past.
A restrained, single-storey timber building marks the beginning of the tour. Together with the landscape and exhibition, it creates a place for remembrance, reflection and engagement.
The award recognises the design’s holistic approach to making the history of Stalag 326 tangible in spatial, atmospheric and thematic terms.
