The Trelleborg, built on the Danish main island Zealand around 981 AD, is one of the best-preserved Viking castles in Scandinavia. The competition design for the new Experience and Knowledge Centre is conceived as a green hill that seemingly 'grows out of the landscape'. The exhibition inside with its dark, earthy colours, presents itself as a 'cut through layers of earth'. The contents are conveyed in an emotional, narrative as well as in a factual, scientific way. On the tour through the exhibition the visitors explore archaeological excavations, a three-dimensional historic map and the everyday of the Vikings, before they immerge into a Viking battle by means of a 180° cinema projection. A light room, the 'Day After' the battle, concludes the film-like exhibition experience.
