Vertical wilderness in the "Haus der Berge"
Permanent exhibition by ATELIER BRÜCKNER
The "Haus der Berge" (mountain house) in Berchtesgaden, which is formally opened by Bavarian minister president Horst Seehofer on 24th May, represents a harmonious interplay of architecture, exhibition and magnificent surrounding landscape. Conceived and designed by ATELIER BRÜCKNER, the exhibition is dedicated to the "vertical wilderness" between the Königssee (a lake) and the summit of the Watzmann (a mountain) in the Berchtesgaden national park. It has been set out as an abstract landscape panorama in which changing light moods are used to give the impression of the four seasons.
"We want to offer approaches - not imitate", says Prof. Uwe R. Brückner, who developed the dramaturgy of the exhibition in collaboration with his interdisciplinary team. Spatial elements positioned as a backdrop make reference to the four characteristic biospheres of the national park: water, forest, "alm" and rock. A large sculpture of the mountain that people can actually walk on is responsible for the striking shape of the building in which the visitor centre is housed. This building consists of an elongated section and a cube with glass surfaces on two sides, which has been placed protectively over the sculpture like a display cabinet. (Design: Staatliches Bauamt Traunstein; Execution planning: Leitenbacher Spiegelberger Architekten).
A tour through the exhibition represents an ascent of around 2,300 metres in altitude, whereby visitors are able to visually and acoustically experience the flora and fauna belonging to the individual biospheres. The tour route actually takes the visitors upwards continuously. The destination of the walk is the summit on which a panorama film with spectacular images of nature from the national park and an impressive view of the landscape surprise the arriving guests. Every 15 minutes, the 10 x 15 metre projection screen opens and reveals a direct view of the national park with its most famous mountain, the Watzmann. This serves as an invitation to the visitors to now explore the national park themselves.
The "Haus der Berge" is the gateway to the Berchtesgaden national park, Germany's unique alpine national park. As early as 1978, 21,000 hectares in this southeast corner of Bavaria were placed under special protection. The new visitor centre enables people to get closer to nature and deepen their personal experience of it and what it has to offer.
